Tamiya Ferrari 360 Modena

I've been busy here in the Bertsch-bilt Model factory. I built this from the outstanding Tamiya kit. The color is a custom mix I developed using Tamiya lacquers and I call it Azzurro Bertschi. I initially painted and cleared it but the clear really changed the color. So, this is just the paint that is very lightly polished. Interior colors are a variety of shades to replicate the actual car's interior: a leather tan (I think I mixed this myself but can't remember), magnesium, aluminum, and semi-gloss black. There are photoetch mesh bits in the various air intake locations. I used metal transfers for the Ferrari logos and the galloping horse. I used SMS carbon fiber twill in the engine bay and KA Models' carbon fiber on the rear panel. I took these photographs before I added the side rearview mirrors. Am I forgetting anything? In an exclusive interview with the Guardian as his 80th birthday approaches, F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone speak out about a variety of subjects, from the future of the sport to Margaret Thatcher, Hitler, Saddam Hussein, democracy, football and what continues to drive him.
The way I feel at the moment, why stop? I do it because I enjoy it. And yesterday is gone. I don't care what happened yesterday. What else would I do? People retire to die. Team order rule needs a re-think

Jean Todt arives for Wednesday's hearing © Getty Images
Formula One should look at abolishing the controversial ban on team orders after Ferrari escaped further punishment for their manipulation of the German Grand Prix result. That is the view of the Daily Telegraph?s Tom Cary, who is of the opinion that the team orders rule now needs to be seriously looked at because of its obvious shortcomings.
?Whether you are for or against team orders, if the FIA could not back up its own rules and nail a competitor in a blatant case such as this the rule really does need reviewing. Perhaps Ferrari?s thinly-veiled threat to take the matter to the civil courts if they were punished too harshly scared the governing body, who as much as admitted the flimsiness of its rule."
Paul Weaver, reporting for the Guardian in Monza, was in favour of the ruling which keeps alive Ferrari?s slim chances in an enthralling championship.
?The World Motor Sport Council was right not to ruin a compelling Formula One season by taking away the 25 points Alonso collected in Germany. That would have put him out of the five-man title race. But the council was widely expected to increase the fine and possibly deduct points from the team, as opposed to the individual. In the end, it could be argued that common sense prevailed. But the decision will dismay those who were upset by the way Ferrari handled the situation as much as anything else.?
The Daily Mail's Jonathan McEvoy expressed outrage at the FIA tearing up its own rule book by allowing Ferrari to escape unpunished.
"Although the race stewards fined them 65,000 for giving team orders in July, the FIA World Motor Sport Council, to whom the matter was referred, decided not to impose any further punishment. It leaves the sport's rulers open to derision. It was, after all, their rule they undermined. In a statement, the WMSC said the regulation banning team orders 'should be reviewed'."

I found that the instument panel in the kit also had a resin pop of the left drive so I used a portion of the right drive as a separate air conditioning /Video center for the rear passengers. I also added a resin pop of a 1/32 truck seat to mimic a child car seat and placed it inthe rear. Other than that, it's a stock build!

Video: Chevrolet Racing "Track to Street" Season 2, Episode 6

Just because we think that it would be cool to be part of a professional racing team, it doesn’t mean that we’re all cut out for the job. Lost in the attention of the glory given to the professional drivers of the Corvette racing team, a group of dedicated and tireless people work behind-the-scenes to make everything possible.

In the latest episode of Corvette Racing’s "Track to Street" series, they talk about the importance of having these guys on board and doing their jobs to the fullest of their capabilities. Leading up to a race, the crew has a lot to worry about, including the car’s engine, tires, wheels, and even strategies being employed during the race. It’s a lot of work that needs plenty of attention and these guys have proven over the years that they’re up to task.

And when the race finishes and everybody else heads out for some nice rest and recreation, the crew sticks around to get everything back in order. From packing their gear to running some diagnostic tests on the car, everything is done meticulously to ensure that everything is accounted for.

If there’s anything that defines ’team effort,’ the pit crew of Corvette Racing fits that mold to a tee.

Video: 11-year old hoons an Audi R8 on grass

Taking all the questions of parental responsibilities out of the equation, you have to give some props to this young 11-year old boy and his rather impressive skills in the art of hooning.

As the video shows, this kid was given the chance to get behind the wheel of an Audi R8, probably with an adult’s consent considering that somebody had to hold that video camera as it was recording.

A part of us is very impressed at the hooning skills of this young kid. There’s a good chance that he’s yet to hit puberty, but he’s already got his throttle-oversteering skills down pat. But as responsible adults, we couldn’t help but cringe at the sight of somebody so young doing something inherently dangerous as this. Heck, he didn’t even fasten his seatbelt before he started destroying those patches of grass.

Sure, it’s an empty field, but a sense of responsibility should still be in play here. if you’re going to let somebody that young hoon a car like the R8, the least you can do is make sure that he’s got his seatbelt on. Better if you get inside the car with him. Best if you don’t let him do it at all.

Other than that, sick skills, young buck!

Tempers blow hot in F1's latest engine dispute

A dreary Friday at the British Grand Prix, with limited on-track running because of the wet weather, was enlivened by a public row in a news conference between the bosses of Formula 1's leading two teams.

McLaren's Martin Whitmarsh and Red Bull's Christian Horner disputed the rights and wrongs of the latest ruling from motorsport's governing body the FIA on off-throttle blowing of diffusers.

If that sounds technical, it's because it is - very. But it's also very important, so please bear with me while I explain the complicated bit as simply as possible.

Over the last year, this technology, which was pioneered by Red Bull last summer, has been increasingly prevalent in F1 because of the dramatic effects it has on improving a car's aerodynamics, and therefore its cornering speed and lap time.

Basically, teams have been blowing exhaust gases over the rear floor of their cars even when the driver is off the accelerator going into a corner.

This ensures downforce remains consistent, whereas if you blow your diffuser only when the driver is on the throttle, it produces instability when a driver least wants it - on the entry to a corner.

There are two types of blowing of a diffuser - hot and cold.

Cold-blowing is what was pioneered by Renault and Red Bull in 2010 - the throttles are left open but fuel is not introduced, so only air goes through the exhaust.

hornwhit595.jpgHorner (left) and Whitmarsh clashed over the new regulations. Photo: Getty Images

Hot-blowing - which generates much more energy and therefore downforce - is when fuel is introduced and burnt but the ignition is retarded to stop the engine pushing the car on while the driver is slowing it down.

Leading engineers say hot-blowing can give an advantage of as much as second a lap over no blowing at all, while cold-blowing is worth about 0.3-0.4secs.

The row started when the FIA decided to introduce a limit of 10% of throttle when the driver was not pressing the accelerator.

Many of the teams objected to that. Mercedes - which supplies McLaren, Mercedes and Force India - argued that they should be allowed to introduce fuel on what is called the overrun, which is when the engine is acting as a brake, for reliability reasons.

Renault objected to this, claiming that it meant Mercedes teams would be getting an advantage, and arguing they should be allowed to cold-blow to provide them with the equivalent advantage. This is what was allowed on Friday at Silverstone.

But Renault's rivals object because the French engine company has now been allowed to have a 50% throttle opening when the driver is entering the corner.

This is what Whitmarsh calls "a very substantial performance benefit". To which Horner responds: "Why is it any more of a performance benefit than fired overrun?"

The irony in all this is that sources say Renault were only using 45% open throttles even before the ruling. If that is true, it means the new rule actually allows them more off-throttle blowing than before.

The Mercedes teams, by contrast, have been "constrained" in terms of the hot-blowing they were doing, according to Whitmarsh. How this all affects Ferrari - who are also believed to have been hot-blowing - is unclear.

Of course, the big question is how those of us watching can be sure that we are watching a level playing field.

I sought out a leading, highly experienced engineer for an answer. He says, in a nutshell, that we can't. But as a reassurance, he did add that "Charlie is very experienced at not having the wool pulled over his eyes."

Charlie being Charlie Whiting, F1's race director.

As a protest against the new ruling, the Mercedes teams ran in second practice with 50% open throttle during braking. Then, there was an explosive exchange in the drivers' briefing with Whiting, with McLaren's Lewis Hamilton particularly animated on the matter.

And now all the engine manufacturers have been summoned to another meeting with Whiting.

seb595.jpgWill the new rules put a dampener on Red Bull's domination of the 2011 season? Photo: Reuters

I would imagine this will run into Saturday and possibly race day, too. F1 loves nothing more than a good row over technology.

For those interested, here is an edited transcript of the row between Whitmarsh and Horner. Those who want to read the whole thing will find it on the FIA website. (http://www.fia.com).

The argument started when I asked whether there was a level playing field and whether this was the end of the matter.

Horner: "First of all there was a technical directive that effectively turned it all off. That was met with reticence by the manufacturers, and it has been very much a manufacturer issue.

"Certain teams were then allowed to have fired overrun, to fuel their overrun, of which there were also secondary benefits, through the exhaust plumes and thrusts that creates.

"Renault presented their position to the FIA - and let's not forget this is an extraordinarily complex matter - to demonstrate that precedent is there that - for purposes of throttle blip (when changing down the gears) and reliability - cold-air blowing, open throttle, was a necessary part of the operation of their engine otherwise it would cause serious issues.

"It would be unfair to allow fired overrun and not allow the same parameters for another engine manufacturer.

"It is a very difficult job for the FIA to pick their way through this and I think all credit to them, they have looked to be as fair, balanced and equitable as they decreed they would be, to come up with a solution that they have.

"We are not totally happy with the solution that we have, that's for sure. I'm sure Martin isn't with his and I'm sure there are a lot of conspiracies in the paddock.

"But that's just circumstantial at the end of the day. The fundamentals are that the engine manufacturers have been treated in a fair and equitable manner."

Whitmarsh: "I'm sure people set out to do that. There have been about six technical directives on the subject so far and when the goalposts are moving part-way through a practice session, it makes it quite difficult.

"To do this in a fairly cloudy, ambiguous and changing way, inevitably in a competitive environment every team feels it's been hard done by. At the moment, potentially a lot of teams will end up making arguments to cold-blow.

"Renault have been in that domain for some time. Other teams haven't and don't have that experience. We are talking a very substantial performance benefit here."

Horner: "Why is it any more of a performance benefit than fired overrun? At the end of the day, Renault is allowed a fired over-run but it can't for reliability purposes."

Whitmarsh: "No, but clearly if under braking the throttles are open 50%, it is a reasonable benefit. It is a lot of gas going through. I would imagine all engines will end up doing that, which isn't what was envisaged when it was said we are going to stop engine blowing."

Horner: "So Mercedes engines aren't firing on overrun?"

Whitmarsh: "They've been constrained."

Horner:
"As have Renault."

Whitmarsh: "Providing the constraints are the same for everyone, but clearly the fact we're having this discussion, it's messy.

"The intention people believed was that we were going to stop exhausts blowing when the driver didn't have his foot on the throttle. I think that was a simple concept. But that concept has been deflected. Therefore it hasn't been clear.

"The fact these things were only coming out in the course of today [Friday] is fairly extraordinary. But nonetheless I'm sure we'll remain calm and pick our way through.

"But probably better to make changes to the regulations between seasons and not in seasons, and to make regulations that are clear and unambiguous.

"At the moment a lot of people are getting emotional about the situation and I can understand why it's frustrating for the engineers not to know what it is we are allowed to do. By cold blowing, you're getting an extra 30 or 40 points of rear downforce in braking and that's quite an attractive thing, so if you can do it you're going to do it."

Horner: "Let's not make any mistake here. Firing on overrun, the thrust that that generates through the exhaust, generates a bigger effect. Let's just be absolutely clear on that."

Whitmarsh: "And that's been largely contained. A lot of those strategies are not permissible now."

Horner: "I read the technical directive that four-cylinder fired over-run was permissible for certain competitors and that includes your engine. As far as we understood, before Renault were allowed their parameters ,obviously there was a significant advantage going to any Mercedes-powered team.

"As you can see, it's a massively complex subject and the one thing Martin and I will agree on is it should have been addressed at the end of the year. But unfortunately here we are."

So now we come to the big one - the British GP at Silverstone. We have the absolutely fabulous new Silverstone wing - 40 garages, superb facilities and everything you could possibly want under one roof. In my opinion, although Silverstone doesn't have the lushness of some venues on the calendar, in terms of the combination of the circuit and the facilities, it is the best of all.

Watch my preview of this weekend's action and see my assessment of the chances of anyone beating Red Bull.

Red Bull's wounds reopen as Alonso shines

At Silverstone

A week before the British Grand Prix, I sat down with Mark Webber to talk to him for his new column for this website.

Silverstone is a track he adores and always goes well on. So, expecting him to be more of a threat to Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel at Silverstone than he had been so far this season, I asked him if he would be allowed to race and beat the German if the circumstances arose.

He was momentarily taken aback. "Well, yeah, I hope so, yeah," he said. "I don't see any reason why we can't."

Given that Vettel headed into the race in complete control of the season having utterly dominated the championship so far, it is easy to see why Webber would be of that opinion.

As it turned out, though, his team principal Christian Horner was not.

Fernando Alonso (left) enjoyed his victory on a frustrating day for Mark Webber. Alonso (left) enjoyed a superb race but it was a frustrating day for Webber. Photo: Getty Images

With a great race winding to a thrilling climax, Horner watched Webber closing in on Vettel at about a second a lap as, ahead of them, Ferrari's Fernando Alonso cruised to a brilliant victory, his first of the season.

Horner would have known how desperate the Australian was for a strong result here, to start to try to make up for a disappointing start to the season compared to Vettel. But he decided that 33 points in the bank for the team was better than the potential of, as Horner put it, "two cars in the fence", and he tried to call Webber off.

And so a wound that has been festering for a couple of years was torn open again.

There is history here, as anyone who followed the titanic struggle between Vettel, Webber, Alonso and McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button in last year's championship will know.

The issue of favouritism at Red Bull is a thorny subject with Webber, who last year at Silverstone had a front wing taken off his car and given to Vettel, whose own had failed.
Webber went on to win that race, and famously said over his radio on the slowing down lap: "Not bad for a number two driver."

The issue had been in the background long before that, and has been ever since, occasionally bubbling up to the surface, such as at the penultimate race of last season in Brazil, when Webber said it was "obvious" the team favoured Vettel.

Red Bull have always denied this, while reserving the right to call off fights when they feel the team is at risk - a policy hardened by the collision between their two drivers while disputing the lead at the Turkish Grand Prix last year.

Horner, well aware of the issues, admitted on Sunday afternoon that he could "understand" why Webber would be "frustrated".

He protested that the two drivers were allowed to race until that point, and that he felt the battle had gone "far enough".

And he insisted that the Australian was not being relegated to a de facto number two driver, and that he would still be allowed to race Vettel.

Let's be clear about this - Red Bull did nothing wrong.

Team orders are legal again in F1 this year, after governing body the FIA finally ended a farcical eight years when they pretended they could police whether teams were using them. And bosses are entitled to tell their drivers to hold station, or reverse positions, if they like.

But as an Italian colleague pointed out to Horner on Sunday, Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz made great play before last season's title-deciding race of the fact that his team would never use team orders to interfere with the championship battle, drawing a pointed comparison with Ferrari's demand to Felipe Massa to let Alonso win in Germany.

Horner's reply - "Mr Mateschitz wouldn't thank us for having both cars in the fence on the last lap, having got ourselves into a very good position" - did nothing to redress the obvious disconnect between Mateschitz's words and Red Bull's deeds.

On the face of it, many will feel that Horner over-reacted, given Vettel's massive advantage in the championship. But did he?

Alonso's victory on Sunday was as impressive as any by Vettel so far this season. The Ferrari driver took advantage of a pit-stop problem at Red Bull to take the lead, but once there his pace was, as Horner put it, "very strong".

Alonso clearly had the speed to compete with Vettel for victory at Silverstone, a particularly impressive feat given that this is a track where Red Bull have traditionally excelled and Ferrari have struggled.

On Sunday night, many put Ferrari's speed down to the row over off-throttle blowing of diffusers that has dominated this weekend.

This technology, in which Red Bull are said to lead the field, was banned for the British Grand Prix, and Horner felt this put his team at a disadvantage. Ferrari, by contrast, were believed by some to have benefited.

It would be wrong, though, to put all Ferrari's progress down to the change in the rules.
As Vettel pointed out: "There has been a bit of a trend over the last couple of races; they have been very strong on race days."

My colleague Mark Hughes will go into this subject in more depth in his column on Tuesday, but it is clear that much of Ferrari's progress at Silverstone can be explained by a major development to their car for this race, on which there is more detail in Ted Kravitz's post-race analysis.

Alonso made full use of it on Sunday with a superb drive, to end a victory drought that goes back to last October's Korean Grand Prix.

The Spaniard was cautious about his title chances after the race, as well he might be given Vettel's 92-point advantage over him - nearly four clear wins.

But there is not a driver on the grid more formidable than the Spaniard with the scent of a possible victory in his nostrils.

Horner knows this full well - after Alonso's superb fight back last year, from 47 points off the championship lead following Silverstone, to leading it after that win in Korea.

Asked on Sunday how concerned he was about Ferrari's pace, Horner did not really answer the question. But if that is what was in his mind when he made the call to Webber, it is not that hard to see where he was coming from.

1969 Dodge Charger R/T

Hey everybody, this is my Revell Charger R/T. This was a gift for Father's Day from my son so I put it ahead of the other projects I was working on. Paint is F6 Bright Green Metallic and the interior and top are done in white. Interior has been flocked and detailed. This was my first Muscle car era vehicle, so thanks to all on the forum who answered my questions. I tried to make it as accurate as possible. Hope you like it, and C&C are always welcome!

Yet another '40 Ford Standard Coupe WIP

I guess I'll get on the '40 Ford bandwagon too. Wink Actually....

This is a long time work in progress for me.

I started with the Revell Goodguys '40 Ford Coupe street rod. So far I've sectioned the body about four scale inches and the other day I did a sloppy top chop on it. The chop is around 6 scale inches.

Originally I had planned to do a mild custom adding only fender skirts and maybe changing the head and tail lamps. Somewhere along the line I got a wild hair and decided to go full tilt bozo with it.

I'm still deciding on what other mods to make and on things like body color and wheels. I'll probably build the running gear straight out of the box and just add some wires and plumbing.

The following shots were taken right after chopping the top and troweling a bit of putty in some of the holes. There's a LOT more work to do and unfortunately I can only spend a few minutes at a time working on it.  I did a quick and dirty mockup using masking tape to hold things together.

Thanks for looking...

70s Chevy Blazer gulebomb scrapbox build WIP

Hey all, This is one of my many WIP I have going. I've been working on and off with this one for a few months now. My LHS has a gluebomb / used parts section that I like to dig through. I found this old 1/24 monogram Chevy Blazer body and some of its parts. This was already painted and put together and torn apart/ disassembled when I found what was left of it. Bought it with the intention of building a post apocoliptic vehicle but the direction changed. I was really needing a pull truck for my galaxie trailer and a lot of 1/25 trucks  just look too small in front of it. I found that 1/24 scale goes a lot better with these trailer kits. I wanted a chevy truck and decided to use this blazer that I had already started.

This is body as I found it. Note the broken / missing door / roof post.

This is the body after I stripped the lime green paint off and repaired the missing post with evergreen sheet. Also pictured are the interior bucket with seats and half the dash, core support, front bumper, gas tank and a parts box chassis plate / front suspension from an unknown truck kit.

Next, I needed some good sized truck tires. I found 6 plastic "tires" from the used parts bin at my LHS to use. Not sure what kit these are from but they are hollow and were missing the tire backs. To remedy this problem, I made a mold of one of the tires and cast a couple in resin. One I am using for the spare with a resin plain bare rim. By pouring only a small ammount of resin in the mold, I was able to make these thin backs for the two front tires. The wagon spoke truck rim is also a resin part I cast.

One major part I was missing was the hood. This is what held up this build for so long. After a lot of looking, I couldn't find one. These are kinda' rare. I did find a couple on ebay, but the guy wanted way too much for them. Falling back on my old saying of " if you can't find it or affort it, build it yourself", I decided to try and make one since it is mostly flat and square to start with anyway.  I had another one of these gluebomb blazer kits that I plan on building now that I've collected up the missing kit parts. I used the hood from this kit as a pattern in making another one out of evergreen plastic sheet. After some measuring, cutting, heat from a candel, some glueing and some sanding, This is what I was able to make.  Now I can actually maybe continue building this thing. Heres the kit hood next to the copy I handmade. Not sure I'm gonna put the vent slots in the rear of the hood yet.

Next, I needed an engine. Simple enough. Digging through my parts box, I found this 1/24 scale chevy 396-454  bigblock that was common in a lot of old monogram kits. I had only one valve cover that fit it, so I cast a duplicte in resin. I also added a resin carb spacer plate to the manifold.

Another important part missing was the headlight bezel / grille. This too is a hard piece to find. I found these two 1/25 truck grilles at my LHS but they were too narrow by 1/8" per side  to fit on the 1/24 body. Not sure what kits these are from but I am going to cut and combine these by using the headlight bezels from the top one with the grille from the bottom one. Then it should fit.
